The human microbiome getting press

The human microbiome and microbiome research in general has been getting some attention in the news lately, so I thought that I’d point you to a couple of interesting podcasts. The first one features our very own Mike Surette in a CBC episode of quirks and quarks that aired in the summer and featured a segment on The World Within Us. It’s an interesting overview of human microbiome research from the perspective of three Canadian microbiologists.

The second is recent CBC episode of Ideas called Synthetic Life featuring highlights from Craig Venter’s Peter Wall Institute lecture at UBC. It’s a wonderful journey of scientific curiosity with the funds to back it up. I really enjoyed his description of how he asks research questions, each challenge approached with a sense of adventure and potential… and humour.
