Dr. Andrew Benson: You’re not only what you eat

It is a pleasure to announce that Dr. Andrew K. Benson, Professor, Department of Food Science and Technology & Director, Core for Applied Genomics and Ecology from the University of Nebraska will be the presenter for the Farncombe GI Noon Rounds on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 from 12-1 p.m. in the Farncombe Atrium.

TOPIC:“You Aren’t Only What You Eat:  The Vertebrate Gut Microbiome is Shaped by Complex Combinations of Environmental Factors and Host Polygenes”

1. How the gut microbiome behaves as a complex trait shaped by multiple host genetic loci and environmental factors.

2. How host genetic factors may configure the gut microbiome by controlling organisms with keystone-like characteristics.

3. How genetic selection in the host can bring about novel combinations of organisms in the microbiota that give rise to unique physiological traits in the host.
